Certainly, the Health Administration’s advice for safely celebrating Halloween during the COVID-19 pandemic focuses mainly on what you can’t do. For a start, traditional trick-or-treating is heavily discouraged.

“The whole act of going door-to-door in groups, ringing doorbells, digging into buckets of delicious candy … create a risk of spreading COVID-19,” said Amizur Nachshoni earlier this month.

In the end, public health officials want you to know that this year’s Halloween is either at home or virtually the safest way to celebrate. But given the pleasures of gathering to celebrate this holiday, how can you make the most of the holiday if you’re distanced from others or at home?

Design a Distanced Candy Delivery

Beau Logo and Kayla Golub are among those who have built a haunted candy chute outside their home and shared with KQED their technique. “It is a 4” PVC pipe length, selected for its long length. An earlier prototype was made of smaller pipe sections linked together, but candy deployments continued to get stuck in the joints. The black pipe was then covered with orange duct tape for a “Halloween” look that was appropriate.

The completion of the yard of Golub and Logo is their cemetery display through which trick-or-treaters can approach, inspired by their favorite Halloween movie, “Hocus Pocus.” They have also placed markers 6 feet apart on the ground, “in case a line forms,” says Golub. The whole thing is a way for the couple to safely continue to invite people to “come have fun and enjoy love work, particularly during this time when we all need a sense of normalcy and connection to the community,” she says.

If you’re at home facilitating any form of remote delivery of candy, health professional Amizur Nachshoni recommends you:

  1. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before and after preparing candy or goodie bags.
  2. Keep your distance and wear a face covering from trick-or-treaters
